Monster

Lord Buldrandt rode beside me through the broad cavern with his glorious silver hair waving like a flag from the top of his helmet. He looked very pretty in his black armor with silver accents. His armor matched his steed, a lizard with more spikes and scales than a dinosaur. I rode the Darkwood beast. It was real flesh and blood and liked snapping at anyone who got too close. The army of Dark Fae and Goblins had no interest in getting anywhere near me. Pity. I hadn’t hunted for a long time.

I shook my head. I didn’t need to pay attention to bloodthirsty impulses. Destruction on a global scale was bad enough.

“You control the beast well,” Lord Buldrandt said in his imperious tones.

“What is yours called?” I asked, ignoring the jibe beneath the compliment.

“It is a Silver-Hide Terror. Why are you here today? Crushing a Dwarven rebellion is beneath a glorious prince.”

“Is that right? But not a glorious lord like yourself? I heard that you were Marius’s brother.”

He gave me a languid look with his devious eyes. “My brother died the day he dishonored our name.”

“How did he do that? I apologize if it’s not an appropriate topic of conversation, but my mother is an uncivilized Wilding and I was raised as a human.” The scent of his blood drifted to me and my mouth watered.

“Surely you’ve heard the stories. The King’s great Warlord succumbed to the charms of a Gnome.” His words were stiff and his thin nostrils flared.

“Is it that embarrassing? Love is a beautiful thing.”

He curled his lip but didn’t actually look at me. “As my Prince decrees.”

“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”

“Ah. And your eye is keen for destruction. Nothing is more destructive than love. You killed Quarl’s love. You should be prepared for her attempt to destroy you and whatever it is that you love.”

“I am. I’m looking forward to it. What is this cavern?”

We were riding through an enormous hall with thick columns dripping and growing green spongy stuff. On the ground, steam rose and curled from pocks in the floor. It was like a swamp cave style.

“Stagnata Murk. The liquid is acid. The spores are poison. The fungus is vampiric.”

“Charming. Why are we coming through here? Isn’t there a more direct route to the Dwarven lands?” I moved sideways as a large web of moss or fungus, or whatever it was, dangled beside me.

“Most paths through the Wildlands are impassable these days. It is the King’s duty to control the vicious verdure.”

The King’s? How dare Brant dictate my duty? Then again, he wasn’t acknowledging me as King.

“How does the King control it?”

“He destroys it, naturally. Destruction flutters at his fingertips.” He spoke so beautifully, making the Dark Fae language sing.

I stretched out a hand and watched darkness gather in my palm. It whispered of death and destruction, of consuming everything. It tugged me in the direction of madness and Darkwood. I frowned in focus and sent the tiniest sliver of darkness up to consume the moss.
